Spotlight on Rwanda

Strengthening Medical Training to Build a Sustainable Workforce

  • Rwanda faces significant health challenges, including a high burden of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV, alongside limited critical care infrastructure. Most recently, the country has responded to the threat of a Marburg virus outbreak, highlighting the urgent need for strengthened epidemic preparedness and frontline healthcare training.

King Faisal Hospital serves as a premier academic and clinical center in Kigali, Rwanda and is one of the host site of innovative training initiatives supported by CHART-A. We are supporting three distinct training programs: a fellowship in pulmonary medicine, a fellowship in critical care medicine, and a residency in emergency medicine. These programs aim to develop a cadre of Rwandan specialists equipped to deliver high-quality, contextually relevant care while also contributing to local training and research capacity. Dr. Tsion Firew, a CHART-A board member and faculty in Emergency Medicine at King Faisal Hospital, provides on-site leadership and ensures that resources are aligned with local priorities and that supported projects reflect the highest standards of educational and clinical impact.

    • Curriculum Development: We are involved in developing and enhancing curricula to ensure that trainees receive up-to-date and contextually relevant education.

    • Access to Clinical Resources: Providing trainees with access to online clinical resources, including medical journals, to support continuous learning and evidence-based practice.

    • Educational Infrastructure: Investing in equipment to facilitate videoconferencing, enabling remote learning and collaboration with international experts.

    • Essential Medical Equipment: Supplying necessary tools such as point-of-care ultrasound devices to enhance hands-on training and patient care.

    • Professional Development Support: Covering expenses related to trainees' attendance at medical conferences, fostering their professional growth and exposure to global medical advancements.

    • Addressing Healthcare Gaps: By training specialists in pulmonary, critical care, and emergency medicine, CHART-A helps fill critical gaps in Rwanda's healthcare system.

    • Enhancing Patient Care: Well-trained medical professionals contribute to improved patient outcomes and overall healthcare quality.

    • Sustainable Impact: Investing in local training ensures long-term sustainability and self-reliance in the healthcare sector.

    • Global Health Equity: CHART-A's work promotes equitable access to quality healthcare education and services in under-resourced regions.
